What You Need to Know About A Sprinkler System

Watering your green space with a hose not only takes tons of time, it can also waste water. If you’re looking to keep your lawn and garden in the best possible shape without worrying about watering at the right time during the day, a home irrigation or sprinkler system might be a smart idea. Key factors like preference and budget play a big role, and each sprinkler system comes with its own unique set of advantages. The three main types of systems you can choose from are spray, drip and rotor systems.

Spray

An automated spray sprinkler system is the most widely used method for watering lawns and gardens. Typical setups include a controller, pipes, valves and sprayers. Pop-up styles rise up from the ground when the system is on, while shrub-style spray systems are mounted above ground to water areas with taller plants. Spray systems can be easily customized and upgraded to eliminate water waste and monitor soil conditions for appropriate moisture levels.

Spray systems work best on flat terrain, so if you have slopes or inclines in your yard, a spray system might not be right for you. They’re also less effective if the soil in your area contains sand or clay since the quick application of spray systems can lead to water runoff.

Drip

Drip irrigation systems deliver water straight to the root zone of plants in slow, steady increments. They typically consist of tubes or hoses that release water through nozzles, inline emitters or micro-sprayers and, when properly installed, can use 30 to 50 percent less water than other irrigation methods. Since drip irrigation systems deliver water at the soil level, there’s no water runoff or waste.

Drip irrigation works well in areas with problematic soil, like sand or clay, since the slow application of water allows for steady absorption. Keep in mind, though, that this type of system requires precise installation and more regular maintenance than other options.

Rotor

Like spray systems, rotor systems direct a stream of water at your lawn and garden, but unlike spray systems, they rotate. The sprinkler body spins around in set arcs, which makes it ideal for watering larger landscape areas. Overall, they distribute water more evenly and precisely than spray systems. If you have odd-shaped or sloping areas of turf you need to water, a rotor system is likely your best choice.
