Common Plumbing Problems, Part I

Posted on 22 February 2021

In this two-part series, we'll highlight the most common plumbing issues you run into as a homeowner. Plumbing problems can be an annoying bane to homeownership. You might be tempted to try to resolve the problems yourself. After all, fixing the problem yourself rather than calling in a plumber can save you a lot of money IF you know what you're doing. Unfortunately, most homeowners don't know what they're doing, and might only make matters worse.

A professional plumber is capable of taking on even the toughest plumbing-related job, ensuring you'll get high-quality work done right the first time, safely. Here are just a few examples of the top plumbing issues homeowners, like you might come across:

  • Water heater issues: The average water heater will last for between eight and 12 years. If you've noticed your water isn't getting hot enough or staying hot long enough, this is likely a problem with your water heater. A professional plumber will be able to carefully analyze the water heater, determine what the problem is and recommend the best course of action, be it repairing or replacing certain parts or replacing the appliance entirely.

  • Leaking pipes: You should always keep an eye out for leaks on your property, or for water spots on the floor or in the ceiling. If you notice issues with leaking pipes, you should make it a priority to get a plumber out to your property as soon as possible so you can determine what is causing the leak and then take the proper steps to resolve the issue.

  • Constantly running toilets: Leaks in toilets can go unnoticed, but quickly add up to wasting a couple hundred gallons of water per day. Often you can replace some of the components inside the tank, but if you've tried this and still have issues with the toilet running, you should call a professional out to deal with the issue instead.

  • Dripping faucets: Dripping faucets might seem like more of a nuisance than anything, but again, like running toilets, this can result in a whole lot of water wasted over time, which is bad for the environment and for your pocketbook. If you're unable to get a faucet to stop leaking yourself, you should get a professional out to handle the problem. The money you pay in repairs will be far less than what you'd lose by just trying to deal with the nuisance over a long period of time.
